Congratulations to Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter on their 77th Wedding Anniversary!

Today is a momentous occasion as former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter mark a remarkable milestone: their 77th wedding anniversary! This anniversary is a rarity, achieved by only a few couples, and solidifies their position as the longest-married presidential couple in US history. It stands as a testament to their enduring commitment and unwavering love for each other.

The celebration comes in the wake of a challenging year for both partners. In February, it was announced that Jimmy, now 98, would receive hospice care, opting to spend his remaining time at home surrounded by his family. Additionally, on May 30, the Carter Center revealed that Rosalynn, aged 95, had been diagnosed with dementia.

Despite these recent health difficulties, the resilient couple is joyously commemorating their anniversary together. Reports indicate that they are keeping the day simple, enjoying a quiet time at their home in Plains, Georgia. While there haven’t been any recent updates about their health, the Carters continue to cherish their time together, receiving visits from beloved family members and close friends.

The love story of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is truly remarkable. Their journey began long before their 77 years of marriage, as they had known each other since childhood. Growing up just three miles apart, Rosalynn was friends with Jimmy’s sister, and from the very first meeting, there was an instant connection.

Rosalynn wrote in her memoir, “I thought he was the most handsome young man I had ever seen.” Years later, when Jimmy returned home from the U.S. Navy Academy, his sister arranged a date between the two, and their connection flourished. They exchanged vows on July 7, 1946, in their hometown of Plains, Georgia.

While Jimmy Carter initially pursued a career in the military, later transitioning to politics, Rosalynn remained steadfastly by his side. She played an integral role in their shared journey, offering valuable advice and support throughout their endeavors. From their early days in the farm supply business to Jimmy’s political ventures, their partnership grew stronger.

Jimmy Carter’s political career culminated in his election as the 39th President of the United States in 1976, defeating incumbent Gerald Ford. As First Lady, Rosalynn wholeheartedly supported her husband’s policies and dedicated herself to mental health advocacy.

Beyond their time in the White House, the Carters continued to make a meaningful impact through humanitarian work. Jimmy founded the Carter Center, an organization dedicated to promoting human rights, for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Rosalynn continued her advocacy for numerous causes, particularly mental health. The couple also became well-known for their unwavering support of the nonprofit organization Habitat for Humanity. Even well into their nineties, Jimmy and Rosalynn could often be found actively participating in building houses for those in need.

Through the ups and downs, their love has remained resilient. Jimmy once shared that marrying Rosalynn was the best decision he ever made and a pinnacle moment in his life. As they both surpassed the age of 90, he attributed his longevity to their enduring marriage. He emphasized the importance of marrying a supportive spouse who challenges and engages you, keeping the spark of life alive.

“The best explanation for that is to marry the best spouse: someone who will take care of you and engage and do things to challenge you and keep you alive and interested in life,” Jimmy expressed in a 2019 interview. “We have had a good life together.”

Let us join in celebrating the 77th wedding anniversary of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter! Despite the recent challenges they have faced, we are delighted to see them commemorate another year of love and togetherness. Please share their heartwarming story and extend your well wishes to the Carters on this special occasion. Happy anniversary!
