Courageous Marine Sacrifices Himself to Shield Comrade from Grenade – Receives Medal of Honor

Meet William Kyle Carpenter, a name that may or may not ring a bell, but one thing that cannot be disputed is that he is an unquestionable American hero.

At the tender age of 21, Kyle achieved the esteemed rank of Lance Corporal in the United States Marines. In 2010, he was deployed to Afghanistan, where he would be tested beyond measure.

Amidst a fierce firefight, fate placed a grenade dangerously close to Kyle and a fellow Marine. Without hesitation, Kyle sprang into action, revealing his unwavering courage. In a split-second decision that spoke volumes about his indomitable strength, he chose to sacrifice himself to save his comrade. He fearlessly hurled his body upon the grenade, using it as a shield to protect his friend.

The aftermath of his brave act left Kyle with devastating injuries. Shrapnel pierced his body, and his skull and face bore the impact of the explosion, shattering bones. Tragically, he lost part of his jaw, suffered a collapsed lung, and was deemed “P.E.A” (patient expired on arrival) upon reaching Camp Bastion.

Over the course of the following two years, Kyle endured an arduous journey of forty surgeries. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, he was honored with the Purple Heart. Furthermore, President Barack Obama bestowed upon him the prestigious Medal of Honor, recognizing his selflessness and valor.

Today, Kyle has retired from military service, and he is committed to pursuing a degree at the University of South Carolina.
