In the vast wilderness of Canada, back in 2016, an extraordinary adventure unfolded, testing the strength and resilience of a lively Golden Retriever/Collie mix named Kali.
Kali’s journey commenced when her owners, Dave Kareken and Joy Neilyset, embarked on a scenic hike along a breathtaking river. Immersed in the beauty of nature, the group ventured through the forest, oblivious to the trials that awaited them.
On this particular day, the once serene river had transformed into a turbulent torrent due to heavy rainfall in the area. Driven by her innate curiosity, Kali found herself irresistibly drawn to the rushing waters. Unfortunately, a missed jump caused her to tumble onto a ledge approximately ten feet below, turning the situation into a nightmare. In a moment of confusion, Kali leaped into the rapid current, desperately attempting to swim to safety. Tragically, the seven-year-old dog was swept away by the powerful rapids, leaving her devastated owners feeling helpless.
“We searched and called for hours, hoping to find her, but there was no trace,” lamented Dave Kareken in an interview with USA Today.
After much contemplation, the family was faced with the heart-wrenching decision to continue their hike without their beloved family member. Dave Kareken and Neily returned to their residence in Asheville, N.C., while their son attended a camp in Minnesota.
“The loss of a family member was something I had never experienced before,” Dave Kareken shared. “The pain was indescribable.”
For the following ten days, Kali’s survival instincts kicked in as she fought against the harsh elements. The forest became her temporary refuge, providing shelter and sustenance. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, Kali’s owners were consumed by worry.
However, shortly after Kareken returned home, an unforeseen and astounding phone call brought unexpected news. Kareken’s heart skipped a beat as he listened to the remarkable revelation: Kali, defying all odds, had been found alive. Despite the treacherous waters that had threatened her life, she had persevered in the unforgiving Canadian forest for an astonishing ten days before miraculously appearing at a nearby campsite.
Driven by sheer determination, David embarked on a 20-hour straight drive to reunite with his beloved dog. With each passing mile, he envisioned the moment when he could embrace his faithful companion once again.
“When I heard she was alive, I collapsed,” Kareken recalled. “I fell to my knees in disbelief, offering prayers of gratitude.”
Fortunately, one of David’s friends captured the heartwarming reunion on video. Kali’s incredible survival and her owner’s unwavering dedication stand as a poignant reminder that the bond between a human and their loyal companion can endure even the most challenging circumstances.
