Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick may not have crossed paths until their 20s, but Sedgwick is convinced that sparks would have flown had they met earlier, especially from her side!
During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at a red-carpet event for the second season of The Summer I Turned Pretty in New York City, Sedgwick, now 57, enthusiastically expressed how she would have perceived her now-husband, 64, if they had met in high school.
“I would’ve been like, ‘Oh my God, he’s incredibly attractive!'” Sedgwick exclaimed, playfully mimicking her heart pounding against her chest. “That’s exactly how I would’ve reacted.”
She also reminisced about her own high school years in the ’70s and early ’80s, describing herself as a “total tomboy” before eventually embracing a “hippie” phase.
“I grew up in the ’70s, you know? The era of serious hippies. I wore tapestry and bell-bottoms,” she shared.
Sedgwick and Bacon first crossed paths on the set of the PBS movie Lemon Sky in 1987, and their connection deepened as they tied the knot the following year.
Reflecting on their initial meeting, Bacon expressed his admiration for Sedgwick during a recent conversation about their enduring relationship, saying, “I was completely blown away. I thought she was incredible.”
At the time, Bacon had already gained fame for his role as Ren, the rebellious small-town character in the 1984 dance drama Footloose. Sedgwick, however, hadn’t seen the film and initially found herself slightly put off by the handsome and rising star, thinking, “Oh, he thinks he’s really cool.”
After some convincing, she agreed to go on a date, and that evening turned into hours of engaging conversation and laughter. Yet, it was Sedgwick’s feelings the following day that made her realize Bacon was the one.
“I woke up and thought to myself, ‘I feel at home’,” she recalled. “That’s when I realized, ‘Ah, that was him.'”
For more than three decades, the couple has built a life together, successfully balancing their careers while raising their children, Travis Bacon, 34, and Sosie Bacon, 31.
“We’ve always been each other’s biggest support and fans,” Sedgwick expressed. She recently directed Bacon in the drama Space Oddity, a film about a young man who aspires to escape to Mars after experiencing tragedy.
Sedgwick also emphasized the importance of humor in their 35-year marriage, stating, “A sense of humor is crucial. He is incredibly funny.”
The second season of The Summer I Turned Pretty will premiere on July 14 on Prime Video.
