Caring for a senior dog is no easy task, and it becomes even more challenging when that senior dog has endured abuse in the past. Trust and love issues are expected, making the transition to a loving home a difficult journey for them.
In Hero’s case, it was particularly crucial to find him a happy and loving home as the rescuers had no idea how much time he had left to live due to the past abuse he had suffered. This became Hero’s ultimate challenge, to find a place where he could experience joy and love before crossing the Rainbow Bridge.
Thankfully, a couple named Rusty and Anna answered the call and accepted the challenge. Already proud parents to a dog named Sugar Bear, they were searching to extend their love to another furry companion when they crossed paths with Hero. The moment they met Hero, his sweet eyes spoke volumes, pleading for love and affection. Rusty and Anna instantly knew they had to bring him home.
However, before they could make that decision, someone else had to give their approval – Sugar Bear, their existing dog. If Sugar Bear and Hero couldn’t get along, it would mean searching for another dog who could be friends with Sugar. So, they arranged a meet-and-greet between the two dogs, and something magical happened.
As soon as Sugar Bear laid eyes on Hero, her face lit up with pure joy. They all knew this was the perfect match, and Hero was going home with Rusty and Anna. And when they arrived home, the loving trio felt an overwhelming sense of certainty that they had made the right decision. Hero yearned for love and affection, always sleeping side-by-side with Sugar Bear and constantly seeking pets from his new parents and anyone else around.
If the pets stopped, Hero would nudge them gently, as if to say, “Hey, I’m still here, don’t forget about me.” And if one person couldn’t give him attention, he would move on to the next, continuing his gentle nudges. Hero’s love wasn’t limited to humans; he embraced other dogs with open paws as well. Rusty and Anna fostered other dogs, and both Sugar Bear and Hero warmly welcomed their temporary furry friends.
Hero adored his human parents. Every day, when Rusty’s loud car pulled into the driveway, Hero would leap to the door, eager to be the first to greet him upon entering the house. He would follow them everywhere, even to the bathroom, much to Anna’s amusement.
When Hero was rescued, he was estimated to be around eight or nine years old, with only a few months left to live. However, he defied the odds and lived three more remarkable years. During that time, Rusty, Anna, Sugar Bear, and Hero shared an immeasurable amount of love and affection.
“Hero changed our family’s life for the better. From the moment we adopted Hero, we promised to love him and protect him. He would never experience hunger or pain again. What’s truly remarkable about Hero is that, despite all he had been through, all he wanted was to be loved by everyone he met,” Rusty and Anna wrote as a heartfelt tribute to Hero, who peacefully passed away on May 6, 2022.
