There are few things that fill me with greater joy than hearing stories of neglected or abused animals getting a second chance at life. The thought of a dog’s life being transformed for the better warms my heart. And the following story is no exception.
Every dog deserves to feel safe and loved throughout its life, but sadly, not all of them get that opportunity. In May 2020, a pit bull named Hazel was abandoned by her owners and ended up at Mr. Bones & Co. and Rescue the Runway. She was in a terrible condition, having suffered multiple injuries.
At the shelter, they discovered that Hazel was eight to nine years old, emaciated, and suffering from diabetes, which had left her nearly blind and weak. She had spent her life as a victim of backyard breeding and had to rely on her other senses to navigate the world around her.
Despite the challenges she faced, Hazel showed immense strength and resilience. The staff at Mr. Bones & Co. and Rescue the Runway grew fond of her, but they knew they couldn’t keep her forever. Fortunately, there were kind-hearted people willing to step up and offer her a foster home.
Elli and Sam became Hazel’s first foster parents and were determined to help her adapt to her visual challenges. They created a safe environment for her, provided sound cues, and taught her signals to keep her from harm. With their love and care, Hazel started to improve day by day, and she began to play without fear of hurting herself.
But her journey to find a forever home didn’t end there. In the summer of 2020, Allison and Pete became her next foster parents. They knew Hazel’s vision could be restored through surgery, and they were more than willing to be part of this remarkable transformation.
In October 2020, Hazel underwent bilateral cataract surgery with artificial lens implantation, and the results were astonishing. After a few days of rest, Allison and Pete eagerly picked her up from the hospital, and the emotional reunion was heartwarming.
With her sight restored, Hazel’s life took a new turn. Allison diligently cared for her post-surgery, administering eye drops and using yummy treats to make it more pleasant for Hazel. A couple of months later, the beautiful pit bull found her forever home with a loving family from Massachusetts, including her canine brother, Cooper.
Hazel’s story is a testament to the power of compassion and second chances. Knowing that she is now living her best life fills my heart with pure happiness.
