Rescued Cat Liberated from Neglect with Two Pounds of Matted Fur Removed

Cats are often considered self-sufficient creatures. Many of them spend long hours outdoors, returning home solely for meals and grooming, making them relatively low-maintenance companions.

However, certain cats possess fur that demands regular grooming, as neglecting it can lead to uncontrollable matting and tangles.

One such cat named Hidey suffered from this unfortunate circumstance when her owner, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, could no longer provide her with proper care. For years, Hidey went without the grooming she required.

Finally, animal rescuers took notice of Hidey after her owner was placed in a nursing home due to the illness. They contacted the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center in Pittsburgh for assistance.

Veterinary professionals estimated that Hidey had endured neglect for up to two years, resulting in the formation of numerous “dreadlocks” in her fur. Some of these matting clumps measured 6 to 8 inches in length.

Jenn Levitzki, a veterinarian who participated in freeing Hidey from her tangled coat, shared a video on Facebook documenting the process. She described Hidey’s matting as the most severe she had ever seen, akin to dreadlocks.

To ensure Hidey’s comfort, she was sedated during the grooming procedure. The shelter’s Facebook page stated, “She suffered from severe matting (dreadlocks, really), the likes of which had been neglected for years.” The post also mentioned that the medical team successfully removed the pounds of intertwined fur from Hidey’s body, resulting in a significant improvement in her well-being.

Following her rescue, Hidey found a new home with a distant relative of her previous owner. It is essential to note that the condition Hidey experienced could have been prevented with proper care and attention.
