As our dogs age, they naturally begin to slow down a bit. However, we go above and beyond to ensure their happiness and comfort during their twilight years.
One particular family went the extra mile to show their love for their aging dog. They even adjusted their sleep schedules to ensure he felt cherished.
Meet Spike, a 14-year-old English springer spaniel. Like many dogs his age, he faces mobility challenges. Recently, he experienced a second stroke, making it difficult for him to navigate the stairs. Regrettably, this meant Spike could no longer partake in one of his favorite activities: sleeping in bed with his family—a tradition he had enjoyed since puppyhood.
Catherine Morris, Spike’s owner, shared the story: “The first night we had him, we closed the stair gate and went to bed. He whined for a couple of minutes before jumping over the gate in the dark and trotting up into my parents’ room and straight up onto the bed! And that’s where he slept from then on.” Unfortunately, their bedroom was on the second floor, making it inaccessible for Spike. Despite his weakened state, he persistently attempted to reach his cherished spot, leading his family to block off the stairs.
However, this loving family devised an adorable solution: if Spike couldn’t join them upstairs, they would come downstairs and sleep with him!
Now, on a rotating basis, family members set up the pull-out couch and spend the night downstairs with Spike to ensure he has companionship. Catherine, who returned from university, was not surprised by her parents’ new sleeping arrangement. They have always shared a deep bond with Spike. “They’re absolutely inseparable,” she shared. “My dad calls him ‘old bean,’ and they’re always chatting away.”
Furthermore, her father would bring Spike his water and food to the sofa, hand-feeding him to ensure he took his medicines and maintained his strength. Spike may no longer possess the vigor of his youth, but one thing remains unchanged: his family’s profound love for him.
Through this selfless act, they demonstrate their unwavering commitment to making Spike’s final years as wonderful as possible. Catherine expressed her adoration, saying, “We love our old boy so much and are so glad to have him in our lives. Hopefully, we have made up for his not-so-good start in life by providing all the love in the world.”
It is truly remarkable to witness the lengths people will go to ensure their dogs’ happiness. We extend our gratitude to this family for their exceptional care of their old dog.
