Tragic Boat Accident Claims the Life of 11-Year-Old Olivia Knighton
On July 19, a devastating boat accident near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina took the life of Olivia Knighton, an 11-year-old girl and the beloved daughter of former MSL goalkeeper Brad Knighton. The incident occurred on the Intracoastal Waterway in Little River, involving a 23-foot boat carrying 12 people.
According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, initial information suggests that the boat carrying Olivia and others was rocked by a sizable wake created by another passing boat. As a result, nine occupants, including Olivia, were thrown overboard. Tragically, Olivia was struck by the boat’s propeller and succumbed to her injuries, making her the sole fatality in the accident. Fortunately, the remaining occupants escaped without injuries.
The authorities are actively investigating the incident, trying to piece together the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.
In the wake of this heart-wrenching loss, Brad Knighton took to social media to express his profound grief and sorrow. He shared that his family is still in disbelief over the sudden and tragic loss of their bright and brilliant daughter, Olivia. The young girl had an immense love for soccer and was a dedicated fan of the New England Revolution, a team for which her father played 12 seasons.
In honor of Olivia Knighton’s life, the New England Revolution displayed her photo on the jumbotron during one of their matches, acknowledging her presence and warm spirit at Gillette Stadium and their training facility.
Brad Knighton retired in January 2023 after a successful 16-season career, with his family always providing unwavering support. Olivia, along with her siblings Owen and Brooks, played a significant role in motivating him to reach new heights in his career. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his family for being with him throughout his journey.
